Supporting Talented Young Athletes

Following CAT 09, the organising committee chose to support 17 year old cyclist Charles Fletcher from Grantown. For more information about Charles see the interview below :

When did your interest in cycling begin?
I’ve always been interested but have been cycling competitively for the past two years. My father is also a keen cyclist and my parents have been great at giving encouragment and taking me to events.

There are so many different types of cycling - mountain biking road racing etc – what have you specialized in and why?
Cyclocross in the Winter and Road and track in the summer. I enjoy mountain biking but wouldn’t want to take part competitively.

What exactly is Cyclocross?
Cyclocross is a cross between mountain biking and road biking with a little bit of running thrown in for good measure. The bikes look like road bikes but have knobbly tyres, mtb pedals and big clearances -to try and stop the inevitable build up of mud. The race takes place over a short 5ish minute lap which can encompass anything and everything from tarmac to sand dunes, the race at Glenmore last year went down part of the dry ski slope! The race lasts for 50 minutes + 1 lap and the winner is the person who completes the most laps. It’s great fun for all abilities as you always find someone to race against.

Sounds tough on cold winter days – How successful have you been at Cyclo cross?
Last year I was 2nd Junior in the series and I won a couple of rounds.

What have been your other main achievements in Cycling?
Last year I was Scottish 1600m youth grass track champion, I also finished 2nd in the open 5000m Scottish champs. Getting to race in Belgium was also a big highlight.

You had a major set back this year – can you tell us what happened?
I had a major crash at the first big track race of the season back in May at Dundee Velodrome. Another cyclist’s pedal got caught in my front wheel and I ended up face planting tarmac at 30 mph! It has been a case of mostly rest and recover since then. It was also the first time on my new bike – I spent the night in hospital but luckily the bike was ok!

Hopefully you’ll be back to full fitness soon – what are your ambitions in the sport?
To take it as far as possible. I am taking several Advanced Highers and a Higher this year and hope to study law next year. I am looking for a university with a keen and active cycling club and is close to good training facilities where I can maximize my chances of making best progress in the sport.

Finally how did you use the CAT grant?
I used it to buy the Dolan track bike – yes the one I crashed on, it wasn’t its fault though, and hopefully it will carry me to success later in the season.

Following CAT 08, the organising committee chose to support two very promising 17-year olds - triathlete John Rutledge from Nethy Bridge and Chloe Robinson from Kingussie. They received a grant award of £700 each and have made great progress.  See below for more information about John and Chloe their achievements to date and their ambitions for the future.

John Rutledge writes:

"I thank the CAT committee for the generous funding of £700, which has assisted my triathlon training and competition.

From the funding I received, I have used it on a variety of triathlon specific equipment like aero bars, cycling shoes, running shoes, tri suit and wet suit. I have used everything I purchased on a regular basis in the MPH Aberdeenshire triathlon series this year. I also competed in my first international event the Alpe d’ Huez triathlon in July. Earlier in the year I entered and won the Scottish Schools triathlon.

I have been achieving some excellent results recently. I was second overall in the Grantown Try Tri, second junior and fourth overall in the Westhill Sprint Triathlon. However my most impressive result so far was in the Huntly Standard Distance (1500 metre swim, 40k Bike and 10k run) where I was first junior and eighth overall with an impressive time of 2 hours 12 minutes, 58 seconds.

For the future I hope to keep up my fitness over the winter by taking part in duathlons. Next year I intend to compete at a higher level in larger events throughout the UK and abroad."

Chloe Robinson writes:

"First of all I would like to thank you for all your help and support this year. The money was a great help and with it I have been able to get hold of most of the equipment I need. With the money I managed to purchase a:
  • Gaastra GTX Race sail in a 9m
  • North sail mast (95% carbon)
  • Boom and adjustable outhaul

This will be put to great use in my training and will be a great help in my up and coming events.

As in all sports many changes can occur out of the blue and this year it happened to me. I had been expecting to change onto formula for the best part of last year but with some hard thought I decided that a move to formula was not in my best interests as it requires a lot of wind and many of the events we go to have little or no wind. This would result in me sitting on the beach for most of my competitions giving me no water time; so instead I thought that it would be a much more positive move to stay with the race board fleet and up grade my racing equipment to give me more of an advantage to the older, more experienced sailors. I also decided that this would be a great move as race boarding in the UK is starting to make a come back and hopefully there will be a few more faces on the windsurfing scene this year and the years to come.

Another big change for me this year has been my race schedule. At the start of this academic year I underestimated how much work 5 Highers would be and with my Higher exams clashing with the start of the windsurfing season I have had to miss quite a few of the events but I have been training as much as possible and with the hard work at school I managed to gain ABBBC. In the Easter holidays I spent Four days training at the Sport Scotland Centre in Cumbrae and then I spent a week in Fuerteventura training in Strong conditions (30- 40 mph winds) to build my strength, technique and confidence in faster conditions. Also while I was over there I went to watch the slalom and freestyle world cup which was amazing. I met one of my ‘idols’ in windsurfing, Iballa Moreno (who is also sponsored by Roxy) and talked to her about my future in windsurfing which was a real help and inspiration.

In between I have been training both on and off the water at Loch Morlich and Loch Insh, in the gym and whenever possible going for bike rides and surfing at Lossiemouth and Sandend. This is all to get in shape for my up coming events.
